Mr. Gettermann will discuss how design, an oil crisis and environmental awareness became strong drivers in Denmark's nation branding.

About the Speaker:
Ambassador Torben Gettermann, who has a long and distinguished career with the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Ambassador Gettermann comes to Hong Kong from New York, where he has spent the past five years representing Denmark as Consul General. Ambassador Gettermann has held leading positions in the Ministry's Departments for Trade and Finance and has taken several posts abroad in Saudi Arabia, Mexico, Hungary, Greece, Iraq, and the United States. Maintaining and strengthening the ties with Danish companies in Hong Kong will be one of the important areas on which Ambassador Torben Gettermann will focus as Consul General.

Mr. Gettermann’s talk is organized as part of the University’s Broadening Course YLAN0006: Living in the Land of the Midnight Sun: Towards an Understanding of Contemporary Scandinavia. This course aims to introduce students to the region of Scandinavia (Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland) through its history and culture. Course will explore features common to Scandinavia as a whole as well as aspects unique to each country. Sino-Scandinavian relations, and draw comparisons between the contrasting lifestyles of Scandinavia and Hong Kong. Students will gain an understanding of a region famous for balancing the demands of an advanced and highly competitive economy with one of the world’s most comprehensive social welfare system.
