Sjón has been inspired by the epic sagas of his native Iceland in his work as a writer, poet and musician. He interweaves folklore with reality to create modern folktales dealing with the eternal puzzles of mankind. His talk will explore the significance of myths in the contemporary world and how they have inspired his artistic output. Sjón’s work has been widely translated and he has taken part in a variety of art shows and music events. In 2001, his long-time collaboration with the Icelandic singer Björk led to an Oscar nomination for his lyrics for the Lars von Trier movie Dancer in the Dark.
